  • 1979 - Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Detriot, Michigan.
  • 1989 - Appeared on television show Star Search and in concert along with Superstar Gladys Knight.
  • 1991 - Aaliyah was signed to Jive Records and was later introduced to Singer/ Songwriter R. Kelly, who become her mentor, songwriter, and producer for most of her early smash hits that helped break her into the music scene.
  • 1994 - Her debut album Age Ain't Nothing but a Number charted at number 24 on Billboard 200 chart and sold 74,000 copies the first week and over 3 million copies overall in the US that certified double platinum. Her debut single Back and Forth topped the charts for 3 consecutive weeks. Her second single released At Your Best (You Are Love) peaked at number 6 on the charts.
  • 1996 - She left the record label Jive Records and signed over to Atlantic Records and worked with new music producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott. They worked on her next album One In A Million. Her greatest hits from this album included If Your Girl Only Knew which topped the charts for two weeks along with single 4 Page Letter. This album certified double platimun in 1997.
  • 1997 - After the success of her second album, Aaliyah began her acting career on a television show, New York Undercover starred as herself. She also became the spokesperson for clothing line Tommy Hilfiger. One of her songs Are You That Somebody was featured on the movie "Dr. Dolittle" soundtrack that earned her first Grammy Award nomination and peaked at 21 on Hot 100.
  • 1999 - Aaliyah landed her first film role in Romeo Must Die and was released in 2000.
  • 2000 - Single Try Again was released on the soundtrack of the movie Romeo Must Die.The music video won Best Female Video and Best Video from a Film on the 2000 MTV VMA's.
  • 2001 - Aaliyah began working on her second film Queen of the Damned. After a 5 year hiatus from her music career, she released her final album, self-titled Aaliyah and it charted at number 2 on the charts, selling 187,000 the first week. The album included single We Need a Resolution. She did her final interview on August 21, 2001 on television show 106 & Park. On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah was in the Bahamas filming her final music video Rock the Boat. After filming, her and her team was eager to get back into the US and decided to fly home early. Upon boarding the small airplane, that had a twin engine, the pilot who was intoxicated advised that the planw was too heavy and was not safe to fly. Despite the warnings, it was decided to take off. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff and caught fire. Aaliyah along with 9 other passengers, including the pilot were all victims of the crash. After her death, her self-titled album went from 19 to number 1 on the charts. Rock the Boat was released and the music video premiered on BET's Access Granted television show and became the most viewed episode in the history of the show. Aaliyah was only 22 years old.
